The Summer Days of Motherhood

More like the summer daze of motherhood if we’re being honest.  The constant picking up of sopping wet clothes all over the bathroom floor, the constant in and out of the house and the endless snacks can definitely cause some major mommy head spins.

Then there are the “well meaning” people who are quick to remind you that you only get 18 summers with your kids so you better cherish even the worst of days. Don’t get me wrong, I totally do. It’s just really hard to do so in the moment of being sleep deprived and hearing your two youngest children yelling at the top of their lungs over some video game because one won’t follow the other around… Cry me a freaking river!

Kids today aren’t in love with the idea of playing long hours outside.. They need constant air conditioning and to tell you how tired they are every 5 minutes. Gone are the days of drinking water from the garden hose or having fun in a sprinkler and then air drying while you ride bikes as fast as you can. (Ahh, the good ole days)

So every chance I get to help my kids enjoy the sweet bliss of their childhood doing anything other than sitting in their rooms on their x-box’s, I’m game! (pun intended) Then there are days where I am drinking my 3rd coffee at noon begging for 5 minutes of quiet because I can’t form a single thought from all the chaos… And I know I am not alone!

There is just something different about summertime. Something that inadvertently makes us moms feel like if we are not constantly doing something with our kids or making the 100th craft idea we saw on Pinterest…then we are failures! Sorry, but I’m not buying what you’re selling with thoughts like that. Let me tell you why…

Believe it or not – kids are simple and yours are, too!! Need proof? Okay! How many times when your children were little would they rather play with the box that the toy came in rather than the actual toy itself.. How many times have you ever heard a small child say this is the best day ever because you flagged down the ice cream truck. Kids are more simple than we realize.

We moms beat ourselves into the ground trying to make sure that our kids are having this grand and amazing childhood with all these expensive trips ( and yeah, they will love those, too ) but, chances are what they will remember most are the blanket forts you make or the silly traditional things that only your family does.

We need to stop driving ourselves crazy and take some time to relax this summer, too. Let the kids enjoy the water or let them play one extra game. The most important thing is that everyone is having fun. That includes us as well.

So pour yourself a 3rd or 4th coffee and take a moment to soak in the brief truce made between your kids before the next fight breaks loose. Summer only lasts a season even though it feels like eternity. School is just around the corner, so don’t forget to update your back to school countdown.. One more day down and don’t kid yourself to think that we aren’t counting them down.

Until next time my beautiful mommies – stay safe, cool and blessed this summer!!
